Significant changes to the New York State Uniform Building Code took effect on January 1, 2026, and the Town of Greenfield’s Code Enforcement office is working to make sure local homeowners and contractors understand how the new rules affect residential projects.
The most notable change involves energy code requirements for new appliance installations in new construction. Under the updated code, certain categories of new installations must now meet stricter efficiency standards, with an emphasis on electric alternatives for heating, hot water, and cooking systems.
“These changes apply statewide, and while they primarily affect new construction, some renovation projects will also need to comply,” said Greenfield’s Code Enforcement Officer. “We want to be a resource for residents who have questions about what this means for their projects.”
The updated code also includes revised standards for insulation, window efficiency, and building envelope performance that align with New York’s broader climate and energy goals.
For homeowners planning construction or renovation projects in 2026, the Code Enforcement office recommends reaching out early in the planning process to discuss permit requirements and the new standards. Pre-application consultations are available and can help avoid delays during the formal permitting process.
The Code Enforcement office is located at Town Hall, 7 Wilton Road, Greenfield Center, NY 12833. Building permit applications and information about the updated code requirements are available during regular business hours. Residents can also call 518-893-7432 for general questions.
The Town Board has directed staff to host an informational session for homeowners and local contractors later this spring. Details on the date and format will be posted on the Town’s website and social media channels.
